Jesus, the natural Son of the Father, the one who told us that we too are the Father’s sons and daughters, had prayed all his life that the Father’s will be done. Now as he hangs on the cross at the end of his life he could say that all is completed, and he could entrust himself fully, in total trust, into the loving hands of the Father.
This is a day of special devotion for us Christians, as we seek to be present to this great event in all its intensity. The lamb without stain is sacrificed, betrayed and abandoned by his closest friends, as the religious leaders bring false accusations against him before the pagan authority to have him eliminated.
We see him bearing all this with real dignity and, though abandoned by all, he sounds so secure in the closeness of the Father.
Yet we might feel confused by the intensity of what is happening before our eyes. All the violence and all the love may become too much for us, and we may feel drawn to look elsewhere.
At this point Pope Francis invites us to look at Christ’s cross and let ourselves be challenged by his final cry.
He died crying out his love for each of us: young and old, saints and sinners, the people of his times and of our own. We have been saved by his cross, and no one can repress the joy of the Gospel; no one, in any situation whatsoever, is far from the Father’s merciful gaze.
Looking at Jesus on the cross and listening to his last words, I let my heart be touched by the depth of his love for me and for all, a love that led him to give himself totally to us. I realise this great love was based on his trust in the Father. And I ask for the grace to enter ever more fully into this mystery of love and trust.
Looking at the cross means allowing our priorities, choices and actions to be challenged. It means questioning ourselves about our sensitivity to those experiencing difficulty. Where is our heart focused? Does Jesus Christ continue to be a source of joy and praise in our heart, or does its priorities and concerns make us ashamed to look at sinners, the least and forgotten?

Padre, tutto è compiuto, nelle tue mani affido il mio spirito
Gesù, il Figlio naturale del Padre, che ci ha rivelato che anche noi siamo figli e figlie di Dio, aveva pregato per tutta la sua vita che fosse fatta la volontà del Padre. Ora mentre pende dalla croce, al termine della sua vita, può dire che tutto è compiuto e può affidarsi pienamente, in fiducia totale, nelle amorevoli mani del Padre.
Questo è un giorno di devozione speciale per noi cristiani, dal momento che cerchiamo di renderci presenti a questo evento grandioso in tutta la sua intensità. L’agnello senza macchia è sacrificato, tradito e abbandonato dai suoi amici più intimi, mentre i capi religiosi portano false accuse contro di lui davanti all’autorità pagana, affinché sia eliminato.
Lo vediamo sopportare tutto questo con dignità regale e, sebbene abbandonato da tutti, appare molto sicuro della vicinanza del Padre.
Tuttavia potremmo sentirci disorientati dall’intensità di ciò che sta avvenendo davanti ai nostri occhi. Tutta quella violenza e tutto quell’amore potrebbero essere troppo per noi, e potremmo sentirci trascinati a distogliere lo sguardo.
A questo punto papa Francesco ci invita a guardare la croce di Cristo e a lasciarci provocare dal suo grido finale.
Egli è morto gridando il suo amore per ognuno di noi: giovanni e vecchi, santi e peccatori, gente del suo tempo e del nostro. Siamo stati salvati dalla sua croce e nessuno può sopprimere la gioia del Vangelo; nessuno, in nessuna situazione, è lontano dallo sguardo misericordioso del Padre.
Guardando Gesù sulla croce e ascoltando le sue ultime parole, lascio che il mio cuore sia toccato dalla profondità del suo amore per me e per tutti, un amore che lo spinge a donarsi totalmente a noi. Comprendo che il suo grande amore era basato sulla sua fiducia nel Padre. E chiedo la grazia di entrare sempre più pienamente in questo mistero di amore e fiducia.
Guardare la croce significa lasciare che le nostre priorità, le nostre scelte e le nostre azioni siano messe alla prova. Significa interrogarci sulla nostra sensibilità verso coloro che sperimentano la difficoltà. Il nostro cuore verso cosa è polarizzato? Gesù Cristo continua ad essere una fonte di gioia e di lode nel nostro cuore, o le priorità e preoccupazioni del nostro cuore ci fanno vergognare di guardare ai peccatori, agli ultimi e ai dimenticati?

Jezusi, Biri i njëgjejshëmi Atit, ai që na tha se edhe ne jemi bij dhe bija të Atit, i është lutur gjithë jetës së tij që të bëhet vullneti i Atit. Tani, ndërsa ai është i varur në kryq në fund të jetës së tij, ai mund të thotë se gjithçka është kryer dhe ai mund ta dorëzojë vetveten plotësisht, me besim të plotë, në duart e Atit.
Kjo është një ditë përkushtimi për ne të krishterët, teksa ne përpiqemi të jemi të pranishëm në këtë ngjarje të madhe me gjithë intensitetin e saj. Qengji i panjollë është sakrifikuar, tradhtuar dhe braktisur nga miqtë e tij më të ngushtë, pasi udhëheqësit fetarë sjellin akuza të rreme kundër tij para autoritetit pagan për ta eliminuar atë.
Ai e sheh duke qëndruar me dinjitet të vërtetë dhe, edhe pse i braktisur nga të gjithë, ai duket aq i sigurt në praninë e Atit.
Megjithatë, ne mund të ndihemi të hutuar nga intensiteti I ketyre ngjarjeve te medha që po ndodhin para syve tanë. E gjithë dhuna qe po ushtrohet mbi Te dhe e gjithë dashuria mund te duken të tepërta për ne, dhe ne mund të ndihemi të tërhequr për të veshtruar diku tjetër.
Në këtë pikë, Papa Françesku na fton të shohim kryqin e Krishtit dhe të lejojmë vetveten që të sfidoheminga thirrja e tij të fundit.
Ai vdiq duke thirrurme dashuri për secilin prej nesh: të rinj e të moshuar, të shenjtë e mëkatarë, për njerëzit e kohës së tij dhe për ne. Ne jemi shpëtuar nga kryqi i tij dhe askush nuk mund ta shtypë gëzimin e Ungjillit; askush, në çfarëdo situate, nuk është larg shikimit të mëshirshëm të Atit.
Duke e parë Jezusin në kryq dhe duke dëgjuar fjalët e tij të fundit, unë e lë zemrën time të preket nga thellësia e dashurisë së tij për mua dhe për të gjithë, një dashuri që e bëri atë të jepte plotësisht veten për ne. E kuptoj se kjo dashuri e madhe u bazua në besimin e tij tek Ati. Dhe unë kërkoj që hiri të futet gjithnjë e më shumë në këtë mister dashurie dhe besimi.
Duke parë kryqin do të thotë të lejojmë që prioritetet, zgjedhjet dhe veprimet tona të sfidohen. Kjo do të thotë të pyesim veten për ndjeshmërinë tonë ndaj atyre që përjetojnë vështirësi. Ku është e përqendruar zemra jonë? A vazhdon të jetë Jezu Krishti një burim gëzimi dhe lavdërimi në zemrën tonë, apo përparësitë dhe shqetësimet e tij na bëjnë të turpërohemi të shohim mëkatarët, të lënët të fundit dhe të harruarit?
