Ecological conversion: Why should I change? [11] – Global crises, a challenge to our faith, our hope and our love

The coronavirus crisis is being compared to a war, which means that our response must be total: we are called to be creative, to call on all our available resources, go beyond our differences and pool all our efforts to win this battle for our survival.

The similarity with the ecological crisis is too evident to need underlining, for both are global crises which demand a total and united response.

Jesus too had a strong sense that the time had come for  real change:  according to the gospel of Mark, his first words addressed to the crowds were, ‘The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!’ (Mk 1:15)  It is an urgent call to radical change as well as to faith and hope.

Repent and believe the good news is a call to conversion, but also a call to faith, to believe. It is also a call to hope, to believe the good news that God cares for us, he cares for the world and will never abandon it, because he has made it himself. The Book of Wisdom has put it so beautifully:

For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for you would not fashion what you hate. How could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you?  But you spare all things, because they are yours, O Ruler and Lover of souls. (Wis 11:24-26).

Believing in God means placing our hope and trust in him when things feel desperate. A few days ago Pope Francis reflected on the challenge Jesus put to his disciples when they felt in mortal danger, ‘Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?’ (Mk 4:40)

The greatest commandment for the Christian remains that of love, which is always put to the test in times of crisis. We are all very deeply touched by those who are on the front line of the battle against the virus, risking their very lives so generously, and our sense of decency and fairness is troubled when we see the meagre resources available to poor countries who are in our own situation, and how careless some rich countries have been in not devoting enough resources to their health services.

The call still rings clear, ‘The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!’

La crisi globale, una sfida per la nostra fede, speranza e amore

La crisi per il coronavirus è stata paragonata ad una guerra, ciò che significa che la nostra risposta deve essere totale: siamo chiamati ad essere creativi, a mettere in campo tutte le risorse disponibili, andando oltre le nostre diversità e ad unire i nostri sforzi per vincere questa battaglia  per la nostra sopravvivenza.

La somiglianza con la crisi ecologica è troppo evidente perché ci sia bisogno di sottolinearla, dal momento che entrambe sono crisi globali, che richiedono una risposta globale e unitaria.

Anche Gesù ebbe forte la sensazione che fosse venuto il tempo di un vero cambiamento. Secondo il vangelo di Marco, le prime parole che rivolse alla folla furono: ‘Il tempo è compiuto e il regno di Dio è vicino; convertitevi e credete al vangelo!’ (Mc 1,15)  E’ un appello urgente ad un cambiamento radicale, così come alla fede e alla speranza.

Convertitevi e credete al vangelo è un invito alla conversione, ma anche un invito alla fede, a credere. E’ allo stesso tempo un invito alla speranza, a credere alla buona notizia (questo è il significato della parola vangelo) che Dio ha cura di noi, ha cura del mondo e non lo abbandonerà mai, poiché è opera sua. Il libro della Sapienza lo dice in modo molto bello:

Poiché tu ami tutte le cose esistenti e nulla disprezzi di quanto hai creato; se avessi odiato qualcosa, non l’avresti neppure creata. Come potrebbe sussistere una cosa, se tu non vuoi? O conservarsi se tu non l’avessi chiamata all’esistenza? Tu risparmi tutte le cose, perché tutte son tue, Signore, amante della vita. (Sap 11,24-26)

Credere in Dio significa, quando tutto sembra disperato, riporre la nostra speranza e fiducia in Lui. Pochi giorni fa Papa Francesco ha riflettuto sulla provocazione che Gesù ha dato ai suoi discepoli quando si sono sentiti in pericolo di morte: ‘Perché siete così paurosi? Non avete ancora fede?’ (Mc 4,40)

Il più grande dei  comandamenti per i cristiani rimane quello dell’amore, che è sempre sottoposto alla prova in tempo di crisi. Siamo tutti profondamente impressionati da coloro che sono in prima linea nella lotta contro il virus, rischiando così generosamente la propria vita. La nostra vergogna e il senso di giustizia sono turbati nel vedere la scarsità di risorse disponibili nei paesi poveri che si trovano nella nostra stessa situazione e come alcuni paesi ricchi non si preoccupino di destinare al loro servizio sanitario risorse sufficienti.

L’appello risuona ancora chiaramente: ‘Il tempo è compiuto e il regno di Dio è vicino; convertitevi e credete al vangelo!’

Krizat globale, një sfidë për besimin tonë, shpresën tonë dhe dashurinë tonë

Kriza e koronavirusit po krahasohet me një luftë, që do të thotë se përgjigja jonë duhet të jetë e plote : ne jemi thirrur të jemi krijues, të përdorim të gjitha burimet tona në dispozicion, të shkojmë përtej dallimeve tona dhe të bashkojmë të gjitha përpjekjet tona për të fituar këtë betejë për mbijetesën tonë.

Ngjashmëria me krizën ekologjike është tepër e qartë dhe duhet theksuar, sepse të dyja janë kriza globale që kërkojnë një përgjigje të plotë dhe të bashkuar.

Edhe Jezusi e kishte kuptuar që kishte ardhur koha për një ndryshim të vërtetë: sipas ungjillit të Markut, fjalët e tij të para drejtuar turmës ishin: “Koha u plotësua e Mbretëria e Hyjit është ngjat! Kthehuni e besoni Ungjillit!”(Mk 1:15) Kjo është një thirrje urgjente për ndryshime rrënjësore, si dhe për besim dhe shpresë.

Pendohuni dhe besoni se lajmi i mirë është një thirrje për një shndërrim, por edhe një thirrje për besim, pra për të besuar. Eshtë gjithashtu një thirrje për të shpresuar, për të besuar lajmin e mirë që Zoti kujdeset për ne, ai kujdeset për botën dhe kurrë nuk do ta braktisë atë, sepse Ai vetë e krijoi. Libri i Urtësisë e ka trajuar atë kaq mrekullisht:

“Vërtet, ti do gjithçka është dhe s’urren asgjë që ke krijuar: sepse, po ta kishe urryer ndonjë send, nuk e kishe krijuar. E si do të mbette në jetë ndonjë send, po të mos doje ti? Ose, si do ta ruante jeten, po të mos e kishe thirrur ti në jetë? Por ti i kursen të gjitha, sepse janë të tuat, o Zot jetëdashës.” (Ur11: 24-26)

Besimi në Zot do të thotë të vendosim shpresën dhe besimin tonë në Atë, kur gjërat shkojne keq. Disa ditë më parë Papa Françesku reflektoi për sfidën që Jezusi u bëri dishepujve të tij kur ndjeheshin të rrezikuar për vdekje: “Pse jeni frikacakë? Po a ende nuk besoni?” (Mk 4:40)

Urdhri më i madh për të krishterin mbetet ai i dashurisë, i cili gjithmonë vihet në provë në kohë krize. Ne jemi të gjithë thellësisht të prekur nga ata që janë në vijën e parë të betejës kundër virusit, duke rrezikuar jetën e tyre në mënyrë kaq bujare, dhe ndjenja jonë njerëzore dhe e së drejtës trazohet kur shohim burimet e pakta në dispozicion të vendeve të varfra që janë në të njëjtën situatë me ne, dhe sa të pakujdesshëm disa vende të pasura kanë qenë në mos garantimin e burimeve të mjaftueshme për shërbimet e tyre shëndetësore.

Thirrja është akoma e qartë: “Koha u plotësua e Mbretëria e Hyjit është ngjat! Kthehuni e besoni Ungjillit!”
