[3] Abraham, our Father in the Faith

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

These few words from the letter to the Hebrews (11:8) summarise the whole drama of Abraham’s life and show us why he deserves to be called our Father in the faith.  There is so much we can learn about true faith by looking at Abraham and his life.

Abraham was a rich man, well on in years and settled, when all of a sudden God called him and asked him to leave what he knew so well, and go to where the Lord will show him.  And he left without knowing where he was going. He trusted God and his word.

This call was accompanied by a promise that was even greater. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing” (Gen 12:2). God promised to give Abraham what he desired most of all, a child who would inherit him and keep his name alive.

Yet, Abraham’s faith sometimes wavered: when his wife Sarah did not get pregnant, he went to her servant, who did conceive, but this was the beginning of even more problems. At one point he asked God, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless?…You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” (Gen 15:3)

But whatever Abraham did, God was patient and never abandoned him, even when he went his own way. He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. (Gen 15: 5)

Although Abraham lived thousands of years ago, we find it so easy to identify with his struggles to trust God. We all have our moments when we are invited to leave without knowing where we are going, and we do ask God when he will give us what he promises. As we read Abraham’s story, narrated so vividly in Genesis 12-25, we too pray to learn how to trust God when we find it too hard to do so.

3. Abramo, nostro padre nella fede

Per fede Abramo, chiamato da Dio, obbedì partendo per un luogo che doveva ricevere in eredità, e partì senza sapere dove andava.

Queste poche parole della lettera agli Ebrei (11,8) sintetizzano l’intera vicenda della vita di Abramo e mostrano il motivo per cui egli merita di essere detto nostro padre nella fede.  Possiamo imparare moltissimo sulla vera fede contemplando Abramo e la sua vita.

Abramo era un uomo ricco, avanti negli anni e sistemato, quando all’improvviso Dio lo ha chiamato e gli ha chiesto di lasciare tutto quello che conosceva e di andare dove gli avrebbe mostrato.  E lui partì, senza sapere dove andava. Si fidò di Dio e della sua parola.

Questa chiamata era accompagnata da una promessa ancora più grande: “Farò di te un grande popolo e ti benedirò, renderò grande il tuo nome e diventerai una benedizione” (Gen 12,2). Dio promise ad Abramo ciò che desiderava maggiormente, un figlio che fosse suo erede e mantenesse vivo il suo nome.

Tuttavia la fede di Abramo qualche volta vacillò: dal momento che sua moglie Sara non rimaneva incinta, si rivolse alla sua serva, che concepì, ma fu l’inizio di problemi ancora maggiori. Ad un certo punto egli chiese a Dio: “Mio Signore Dio, che mi darai? Io me ne vado senza figli… un mio domestico sarà mio erede.” (Gen 15, 2-3)

Ma qualunque cosa Abramo facesse, Dio aveva pazienza e non lo abbandonava mai, neanche quando faceva di testa sua. Poi lo condusse fuori e gli disse: “Guarda in cielo e conta le stelle, se riesci a contarle” e soggiunse: “Tale sarà la tua discendenza”.  Egli credette al Signore, che glielo accreditò come giustizia. (Gen 15, 5-6)

Sebbene Abramo sia vissuto migliaia di anni fa, ci risulta facile identificarci nelle sue fatiche a fidarsi di Dio. Tutti viviamo momenti in cui siamo invitati a partire senza sapere dove andremo e in cui chiediamo a Dio quando ci darà ciò che ci ha promesso. Mentre leggiamo la storia di Abramo, raccontata in modo così vivido in Genesi 12-25, preghiamo per imparare a fidarci di Dio anche quando ci sembra troppo difficile.

3. Abrahami, Ati ynë në Besim

Me anë të besimit, Abrahami ,kur u thirr ,u bind të shkonte në një vend që do t merrte si trashëgim. Dhe u nis , pa e ditur se ku po shkonte.

Këto pak fjalë nga letra drejtuar Hebrenjve (11:8) përmbledhin të gjithë dramën e jetës së Abrahamit dhe na tregojnë pse ai meriton të quhet Ati ynë në besim. Ne mund të mësojmë shumë për besimin e vërtetë nëse shohim Abrahamin dhe jetën e tij.

Abrahami ishte një burrë i pasur, me veti të mira dhe i vendosur, kur papritmas Zoti e thirri dhe i kërkoi të linte atë që dinte aq mirë dhe të shkonte atje ku do t’i tregojë Zoti. Dhe ai u nis pa e ditur se ku po shkonte. Ai i besoi Zotit dhe fjalës së tij.

Kjo thirrje u shoqërua me një premtim edhe më të madh.Prej teje do të të bëj një komb të madh dhe do të të bekoj; Do ta bëj të madh emrin tënd dhe ti do të jesh një bekim” (Zanafilla 12:2). Zoti i premtoi t’i jepte Abrahamit atë që donte më shumë nga të gjitha, një fëmijë që do ta trashëgonte dhe do t’i mbante të gjallë emrin.

Megjithatë edhe besimi i Abrahamit ndonjëherë luhatej: kur gruaja e tij Sara nuk mbeti shtatzënë, ai shkoi te shërbëtorja, e cila mbeti shtatzënë, por ky ishte fillimi i problemeve edhe më shumë. Në një moment ai e pyeti Zotin: “O Zot, Hyj, çfarë do të më japësh, sepse unë jam pa fëmijë?” (Zan 15:3)

Por çfarëdo që bëri Abrahami, Zoti ishte i durueshëm dhe nuk e braktisi atë kurrë,edhe kur ai shkoi në rrugën e tij. E nxori jashtë dhe i tha: “Shiko nga qielli dhe numëro yjet, nëse mund t’i numërosh”. Dhe shtoi: “Kështu do të jenë pasardhësit e tu”. Ai i besoi Zotit; dhe Zoti ia ҁmoi për drejtësi. (Zan 15:5)

Megjithëse Abrahami jetoi mijëra vjet më parë, ne e kemi kaq të lehtë të identifikohemi me përpjekjet e tij për t’i besuar Perëndisë. Të gjithë kemi momentet kur na ftojnë të largohemi pa e ditur se ku po shkojmë dhe i kërkojmë Zotit kur do të na japë atë që na premton. Ndërsa lexojmë historinë e Abrahamit, të rrëfyer kaq gjallërisht te Zanafilla 12-25, edhe ne lutemi që të mësojmë se si t’i besojmë Zotit atëherë kur e kemi shumë të vështirë ta bëjmë këtë.
