Conversion [5] Jesus my model, my king, my true leader

During the process of canonisation of St Ignatius, one of the monks of the Abbey of Montserrat who got to know him during his visits to the monastery in the months after his conversion, described him as, ‘a bit wild, passionate for Christ’.

Many things changed in Ignatius over the years since those months in Manresa and Montserrat, but his passionate love for the person of Jesus only increased. It remained at the centre of his life, and when he came to found a new religious order he was adamant on its name: The Society of Jesus.

More importantly, in the Spiritual Exercises he invites those doing this experience to spend most of their time contemplating the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. He suggests to the exercitant to pray with insistence throughout most of the retreat, for interior knowledge of the Lord, who for me has become man, that I may love him more and follow him [SpEx 104].

In the Exercises, Jesus is my Lord, my Eternal King [91], my commander-in-chief [136], my supreme and true commander [139], our high Priest, our model and rule [344]. One key to discerning how I should behave is to seek ‘the grace to imitate him’ [139], even in such mundane, everyday activities like eating [214].

Ignatius believes that contemplating Jesus in his humanity, spending a long time just looking at what he did, listening to what he said and seeing how he interacted with others in the gospel scenes, is the royal road to conversion. I will always find something from which I can draw profit, and I will discover that my prayer to know and love him more is being answered.

I discover in myself the desire to answer fully and generously to the call of the King to be with him, sharing his suffering and labours and then follow him into glory. In the Meditation on the Two Standards, I beg the Father, through the intercession of Mary and Jesus himself, to be received under the standard of Jesus. My desire ‘to imitate him more closely’ [147] is so strong that I ask to be given the grace to share his lot, even to the extent of suffering humiliations and insults.

My heart gradually grows in the realisation that it is truly my ‘resolute wish and desire, and my considered determination…to imitate you’, as I share your own choices and their consequences [98]. That is real conversion.

[I] ask God Our Lord for grace that all my intentions, actions and operations may be directed purely to the service and praise of His Divine Majesty [SpEx 46] .

Gesù il mio modello, il mio re, il mio vero capitano

Durante il processo di canonizzazione di S. Ignazio, uno dei monaci dell’Abbazia di Montserrat che lo aveva conosciuto durante le sue visite al monastero nei mesi successive alla sua conversione, lo descrisse così: ‘un po’ folle, un appassionato di Cristo’.

Negli anni successivi a quei mesi di Manresa e Montserrat ci furono tanti cambiamenti in Ignazio, ma il suo amore appassionato per la persona di Gesù crebbe sempre. Rimase il centro della sua vita e quando fondò un nuovo ordine religioso fu irremovibile riguardo al nome da dargli: Compagnia di Gesù.

Più ancora, negli Esercizi Spirituali egli invita quelli che fanno questa esperienza a trascorrere la maggior parte del tempo a contemplare la vita, la passione, morte e resurrezione di Gesù. Invita gli esercitanti a pregare con insistenza durante gran parte del ritiro, per un’ intima conoscenza del Signore, che si è fatto uomo per me, perché possa più amarlo e seguirlo [EE. SS. 104].

Negli Esercizi, Gesù è il mio Signore, il Re Eterno [91], il mio comandante-in-capo [136], il mio supremo e vero capitano [139], il nostro supremo Pontefice, nostro modello e nostra regola [344]. Un criterio chiave per discernere come dovrei comportarmi è chiedere ‘la grazia di imitarlo’ [139], anche nelle occasioni mondane e nelle attività quotidiane come il mangiare [214].

Ignazio crede che contemplare Gesù nella sua umanità, sostando a lungo ad osservare cosa fa, ad ascoltare cosa dice e a guardare come interagisce con gli altri negli episodi del Vangelo, sia la via regale per la conversione. Troverò sempre qualcosa da cui trarre profitto e scoprirò che la mia preghiera di conoscerlo e amarlo di più è stata esaudita.

Scopro in me stesso il desiderio di rispondere pienamente e generosamente alla chiamata del Re, di stare con lui, di condividere la sua sofferenza e la sua fatica e di seguirlo poi nella gloria. Nella Meditazione delle Due Bandiere prego il Padre, per intercessione di Maria e dello stesso Gesù di essere accolto sotto la bandiera di Gesù. Il mio desiderio ‘di imitarlo maggiormente’ [147] è così forte che chiedo che mi sia data anche la grazia di condividere la sua sorte, fino al punto di soffrire   umiliazioni e insulti.

Nel mio cuore gradualmente cresce la consapevolezza che veramente ‘voglio e desidero ed è mia ferma decisione… imitarti’, tanto da condividere le tue scelte e le loro conseguenze [98]. Questa è la vera conversione.

Gjatë procesit të kanonizimit të Shën Injacit, një nga murgjit e Abacisë së Montserratit i cili e njohu atë gjatë vizitave të tij në manastir në muajt pas kthimit të tij e përshkroi atë si, “pak të egër, të pasionuar për Krishtin”.

Shumë gjëra ndryshuan tek Injaci me kalimin e viteve që prej atyre muajve në Manresa dhe Montserrat, por dashuria e tij pasionante për personin e Jezusit vetëm sa rritej. Ai mbeti gjithmonënë qendër të jetës së tij . Kjo shihet qartë edhe për faktin se ndërsa ai po krijonte urdhrin e ri fetar , emri i këtijurdhri ishte i padiskutueshëm: Shoqëria e Jezusit.

Çkaështë më e rëndësishmja, në Ushtrimet Shpirtërore ai i fton ata që ishin duke e bërë këtë përvojë të kalojnë pjesën më të madhe të kohës duke soditur jetën, pasionin, vdekjen dhe ringjalljen e Jezusit. Ai i sugjeron atyre të luten me këmbëngulje gjatë shumicës kohëssë tërheqjesshpirtërore, për tënjohur Zotin më nëbrendësi, i cili për mua është bërë njeri, që unë ta dua dhe ta ndjek atë më shumë [USH 104].

Në Ushtrime, Jezusi është Zoti im, Mbreti im i Përjetshëm [91], komandanti im i përgjithshëm [136], komandanti im suprem dhe i vërtetë [139], Kryeprifti ynë, modeli dhe rregulli ynë [344]. Një çelës për të dalluar sesi duhet të sillem është të kërkoj ‘hirin për ta imituar atë’ [139], madje edhe në veprimet e mia të përditshme, siçështë ngrënia [214].

Injaci beson se përsiatja për Jezusin në njerëzimin e tij, duke kaluar një kohë të gjatë vetëm duke parë atë që bëri, duke dëgjuar atë që tha dhe duke parë se si ai ndërvepronte me të tjerët në skenat e ungjillit, është rruga mbretërore e kthimit në besim. Unë gjithmonë do të gjej diçka nga e cila mund të nxjerr përfitim dhe do të zbuloj se lutja ime për ta njohur dhe dashuruar atë më shumë po përgjigjet.

Unë zbuloj në vetvete dëshirën për t’iu përgjigjur plotësisht dhe bujarisht thirrjes së Mbretit për të qenë me të, duke u bërë pjesë evuajtjeve dhe mundimeve e Tij dhe me pasdëshirënpërta ndjekurAtënë lavdi. Në Meditimin për dy Flamujt [137], unë i lutem Atit, përmes ndërmjetësimit të Marisë dhe vetë Jezusit, që të jem pranuar nën flamurin e Jezusit. Dëshira ime “për ta imituar atë më nga afër” [147] është aq e fortë sa që kërkoj të më jepet hirin për të bashkuar vuajtjet, madje edhe në vuajtjet më tëmëdha, ato të poshtërimeve dhe fyerjeve.

Zemra ime rritet gradualisht duke kuptuar se është me të vërtetë ‘dëshira dhe kërkesa ime e vendosur dhe vendosmëria ime e padiskutueshme… për të imituar Ty’, pasi unë bëhem pjese e  zgjedhjeve Tua dhe jam i gatshëmedhe për pasojat e tyre [98]. Ky është shndërrim i vërtetë.
