You migrants are warriors of hope! (Traduzione italiana in fondo alla pagina)


You migrants are warriors of hope! This is how Pope Francis addressed migrants during his visit to Bologna last October. He went on to encourage the city and its citizens not to be afraid of migrants, and called on nations to open broader avenues for immigration.

In any list of hopeless situations, migration would certainly come out on top. On a scale hitherto unseen, it constitutes one of the biggest challenges to the contemporary world on many levels. Whatever we say or feel, we cannot avoid it, and more worryingly, it seems it will not go away. Millions are simply fleeing for their lives, escaping war or ecological disaster in their countries. Many others, aware of the absurdly different levels of life in other parts of the world are ready to take big risks as they seek a better future.

In a situation where no one seems to have a simple solution, the easiest attitude is one of closure, whether of borders or of opportunities: it is essentially a closure of hearts, mostly fuelled by fear of those who are different.  Sometimes it is also a product of ignorance: resistance to welcome migrants is often stronger in areas where there are few migrants. Politicians of all colours find the migration card one of the easiest to play, even though they know they are not capable of stopping the flows of migrants.

It is certainly not irrelevant that Jesus, our saviour and the saviour of human history, had to flee his country to live his childhood years in Egypt, where people spoke a different language and practised another religion. Our leader was himself a refugee!

Where can our hope come from? The Pope says it comes from the migrants themselves, who battle huge odds and risk their lives because they believe that a better, peaceful and just future is possible. They place their hope on the humanity we all share, and take huge risks trusting they will be welcomed.

Light comes from darkness, and what at first seems to be the problem at the end shows us a way to the solution.

As I ask Jesus to shine his light on the darkness of the migration issue, I try to leave my comfort zone and reach out to migrants this Christmas. I struggle to find space in my heart to listen to their stories and to their reasons, and thus be led into greater hope.

Voi migranti siete i guerrieri della speranza!

Queste sono le parole che Papa Francesco ha rivolto ai migranti durante la sua visita a Bologna dello  scorso ottobre.  Ha continuato incoraggiando la città e i cittadini a non aver paura dei migranti e si è rivolto alle nazioni perché aprano canali più ampi per l’immigrazione.

In qualunque lista di situazioni disperate, l’immigrazione sarebbe certamente al primo posto. Su scala finora mai vista, costituisce una delle più grandi sfide del mondo contemporaneo a tanti livelli. Qualunque cosa diciamo o sentiamo, non possiamo evitarlo, e, ancora più preoccupante, sembra non cesserà. Milioni di persone stanno semplicemente fuggendo per mettere in salvo la propria vita, scappando da guerre o disastri ecologici presenti nei loro paesi. Molti altri, consapevoli di livelli di vita assurdamente diversi in altre parti del mondo, sono pronti ad affrontare un grosso rischio per cercare un futuro migliore.

In una situazione dove nessuno sembra avere una soluzione semplice, l’atteggiamento più facile è quello della chiusura o dei confini, o delle opportunità: è essenzialmente una chiusura del cuore, alimentata principalmente dalla paura di chi è diverso.  Talvolta è anche frutto di ignoranza: la resistenza nell’accogliere i migranti è spesso più forte in zone dove ce ne sono pochi. I politici di ogni colore trovano che la carta dell’immigrazione sia una delle più facile da giocare, sebbene sappiano di non essere capaci di fermare i flusso dei migranti.

Non è certamente  irrilevante che  Gesù, il nostro Salvatore e Salvatore della storia umana, abbia dovuto fuggire dal suo paese e vivere la sua infanzia in Egitto, dove la gente parlava una lingua diversa e praticava un’altra religione. Il nostro leader è stato lui stesso un rifugiato!

Da dove verrà la nostra speranza? Il Papa dice che verrà dai migranti stessi, che affrontano enormi  peripezie e rischiano la loro vita perché credono che un futuro migliore, pacifico e giusto sia possibile. Essi ripongono la loro speranza nell’umanità che tutti condividiamo e corrono enormi rischi confidando che saranno accolti.

La luce viene dalle tenebre, e ciò che a prima vista sembra essere il problema alla fine ci mostra la via per la soluzione.

Chiedendo a Gesù di illuminare con la sua luce le tenebre del problema immigrazione, cerco di lasciare la mia zona di comodo e di avvicinarmi ai migranti in questo Natale. Combatto per trovare spazio nel mio cuore per ascoltare le loro storie e le loro ragioni ed essere, così, condotto ad una speranza più grande.
