[13] He loved them to the end (Jn 13: 1-20) 
Today we start the three most solemn days of the Christian year, when all that we have been saying about love is manifested for all to see.
St John, in the very solemn introduction of his gospel’s account of the Last Supper, tells us that Jesus, ‘having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end’. These words are the key to understand all that will be taking place during the following days.
This is the day of the washing of the feet, where Jesus insists he did this to give us an example so that we can do likewise with one another.
It is the day of the institution of the Eucharist, where ‘he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”’(Lk 22: 19) Throughout his life, and in special way during the Passion, Jesus really took his life in his own hands, and in obedience to the Father, let it be broken for our sake: the Eucharist not only foretells what was going to take place on Calvary but describes Jesus’ total gift to us who are totally unworthy of this love.
It is also the day when Jesus prayed the most beautiful prayer ever: “Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want” (Mk 14: 36). It was no easy prayer to make – the Gospel tells us that he sweated blood, and he asked his three closest friends to stay awake with him for his soul was sorrowful unto death.
It is the night of his arrest, his betrayal by one of his inner circle, and his denial by the one he had chosen to lead his church, a night of insults and torture, the night when the chief priests and the rabbis had to revert to false witnesses to be able to convict him of a crime that carried the death penalty.
Too many things happen, too much for our spirit to grasp wholly. We can try to stay with just one of the events of this day, and let our gaze rest on him who loved us to the end. We let our hearts fill with wonder and gratitude at such great love.
The piece of music we have chosen to accompany today’s reflection is the chorale from Bach’s St Matthew’ passion, the response given to Jesus when he asks his friends to stay awake with him in the garden of Gethsemane. Li amò sino alla fine (Gv 13, 1-20)
Oggi iniziano i tre giorni più solenni dell’anno liturgico cristiano, in cui tutto ciò che abbiamo detto riguardo l’amore si mosterà davanti ai nostri occhi.
- Giovanni, nella solenne introduzione del suo racconto evangelico dell’ultima cena, ci dice che Gesù ‘dopo aver amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine’. Queste parole sono la chiave di lettura per capire tutto ciò che avverrà nei giorni seguenti.
Questo è il giorno della lavanda dei piedi, in cui Gesù afferma che ha fatto questo gesto per dare a noi un esempio, in modo che possiamo fare lo stesso gli uni con gli altri.
E’ il giorno dell’istituzione dell’ Eucarestia, in cui ‘prese un pane, rese grazie, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo:“Questo è il mio corpo che è dato per voi; fate questo in memoria di me.”’(Lc 22, 19). Per tutta la sua vita, e specialmente durante la Passione, Gesù davvero prende la sua vita nelle sue mani e, in obbedienza al Padre, lascia che sia spezzata per la nostra salvezza: l’Eucarestia non solo preannuncia cosa sta per accadere sul Calvario, ma descrive il dono totale di Gesù per chi è totalmente immeritevole di questo amore.
Questo è anche il giorno in cui Gesù ha pronunciato la preghiera più bella che sia mai stata pronunciata: “Abbà, Padre! Tutto è possibile a te, allontana da me questo calice! Però non ciò che io voglio, ma ciò che vuoi tu” (Mc 14, 36). Non era una preghiera facile da fare – il Vangelo ci dice che Gesù sudò sangue e che chiese ai suoi tre amici più intimi di vegliare con Lui, perché la sua anima era triste fino alla morte.
E’ la notte del suo arresto, del tradimento da parte di una persona della sua cerchia più intima, del rinnegamento da parte di colui che aveva scelto per guidare la sua chiesa, una notte di insulti e di torture, la notte in cui i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi hanno dovuto rivolgersi a falsi testimoni per potergli imputare un crimine che comportasse la pena di morte.
Troppe cose accadono, troppe perché il nostro spirito possa comprenderle pienamente. Possiamo provare a rimanere su uno solo degli eventi di questo giorno e lasciare che il nostro sguardo si posi su Colui che ci ha amato fino alla fine. Lasciamo che i nostri cuori si riempiano di meraviglia e di gratitudine per un amore così grande.

Ai i deshi ata deri në fund (Gjn 13, 1-20)
Sot ne fillojmë tre ditët më solemne të vitit për të krishterët, ku gjithçka që kemi thënë për dashurinë manifestohet për të gjithë.
Shën Gjoni, në prezantimin shumë solemn në ungjillin e tij rreth Darkës së Fundit, na tregon se Jezusi, “duke dashur të vetët që ishin në botë, i deshi ata deri në fund”. Këto fjalë janë çelësi për të kuptuar të gjitha ato që do të ndodhin gjatë ditëve në vijim.
Kjo është dita e larjes së këmbëve, kur Jezusi këmbënguli që ta bënte këtë për të na dhënë një shembull e për të na thënë se duhet edhe ne të veprojmë në këtë mënyrë me njëri-tjetrin.
Është dita e institucionit të Eukaristisë, ku “mori bukën, falënderoi, e theu ,ua dha nxënësve dhe tha : “Ky është trupi im që do të flijohet për ju. Bëni këtë në përkujtimin tim. “(Lk 22, 19) Gjatë gjithë jetës së tij dhe në mënyrë të veçantë gjatë mundimeve ,Jezusi me të vërtetë e vë jetën e tij në duart e veta dhe, duke iu bindur Atit, lejon që të flijohet për ne : Eukaristia jo vetëm që parathotë atë që do të ndodhë në Kalvar, por përshkruan Jezusin si një dhuratë e dhënë krejtesisht për ne .
Është gjithashtu edhe dita kur Jezusi u lut me lutjen më të mrekullueshme që ishte dëgjuar ndonjëherë: “Abba, Atë,ti mundesh gjithcka ;largoje prej meje këtë kelk mundimesh ; por jo si dua unë, por si do ti “(Mk 14, 36). Nuk ishte një lutje e lehtë për ta bërë -Ungjilli na tregon se ai djersiti gjak dhe u kërkoi tre miqëve të tij më të afërt që të qëndronin zgjuar me të, pasi shpirti e tij ishte i trishtuar deri në vdekje.
Është nata e arrestimit të tij, e tradhëtimit nga rrethi më i ngushtë i tij, e mohimit të tij nga ai që e kishte zgjedhur të drejtojë kishën e tij, një natë fyerjesh dhe torturash, nata kur krerët e priftërinjve dhe rabinët duhet të bëjnë dëshmi të rreme që të jenë në gjendje ta dënojnë Atë për një krim që do të mbartë dënimin me vdekje.
Shumë gjëra ndodhin, shumë për shpirtin tonë që të kuptojmë gjithçka plotësisht. Të përpiqemi të qëndrojmë të pakten me një nga ngjarjet e kësaj dite dhe le të sjellim krejt vështrimin tonë drejt Atij që na deshi deri në fund. Ne lejojmë që zemrat tona të mrekudhohen dhe të jenë mirënjohëse ndaj kësaj dashurie kaq të madhe.
