[5] – Stepping beyond: the local and the universal

At the beginning of his encyclical (FT 3), the Pope recalls St Francis’ visit to Sultan Malik-el-Kamil, in Egypt. This was the time of the Crusades, of intense hatred and conflict between Muslims and Christians. Yet Francis felt the call to spread his message of universal brotherhood even to those who were considered infidels and enemies of our religion. The call to universal brotherhood and social friendship is still urgent today.

Our world is globalised, a process that is happening with such speed that it often leaves us disoriented. Globalisation has made communication much easier, bringing humankind closer than ever before. Yet it has also made many victims, weakened local communities, and diluted our sense of identity. Often we feel no more than parts of an anonymous multitude of individuals, with little control over what is going on. The temptation to withdraw into what we know well and which we can control is becoming stronger for more people.

Fratelli tutti invites us to work for a new relationship between the local and the global. ‘We need to pay attention to the global so as to avoid narrowness and banality. Yet we also need to look to the local, which keeps our feet on the ground.’ (FT 142)

Christmas is a time when we can feel this tension more than usual. It is the family feast par excellence, linked to so many local customs that warm our hearts and give it meaning. Yet its message is at the same time universal, of peace for all those of good will. Jesus was born a Jew, in the town of Bethlehem, but, as the angel proclaimed to the shepherds, the good news of salvation he brings is not only for you but for the whole people.

‘We need to have a global outlook to save ourselves from petty provincialism. When our house stops being a home and starts to become an enclosure, a cell, then the global comes to our rescue,  drawing us towards our fulfilment.’  (FT 142) We need the challenge of what is happening in other places, openness to enrichment by other cultures, solidarity for the tragedies affecting other peoples.

‘At the same time, the local has to be eagerly embraced, for it possesses something that the global does not: it is capable of being a leaven, of bringing enrichment, of sparking mechanisms of subsidiarity. ‘ (ibid)

St Francis, pray for us, give us your authentic Christian spirit.

  • Andiamo oltre: il locale e l’universale

All’inizio della sua enciclica (FT 3), il Papa ricorda la visita di san Francesco al sultano Malik-el-Kamil in Egitto. Era il tempo delle crociate, di odio e aspri conflitti fra mussulmani e cristiani. Tuttavia Francesco ha sentito la chiamata a portare il messaggio della fratellanza universale anche a coloro che erano considerati infedeli e nemici della propria religione. Il richiamo alla fratellanza universale e all’amicizia sociale è urgente ancora oggi.

Il nostro mondo diventa globale e questo processo sta avvenendo ad una tale velocità da lasciarci spesso disorientati. La globalizzazione ha reso la comunicazione molto più facile, rendendo il genere umano più vicino che in tutte le epoche passate. Ma ha anche fatto molte vittime, ha indebolito le comunità locali e attenuato il nostro senso di identità. Spesso non ci sentiamo altro che parti di una moltitudine anonima di individui, con pochissimo controllo su ciò che sta avvenendo. La tentazione di ritirarsi in ciò che si conosce bene e che si può controllare sta diventando più forte in sempre più persone.

La Fratelli tutti ci nvita a lavorare in direzione di una nuova relazione fra il locale e il globale. ‘Bisogna prestare attenzione alla dimensione globale per non cadere in una meschinità quotidiana. Al tempo stesso, non è opportuno perdere di vista ciò che è locale, che ci fa camminare con i piedi per terra.’ (FT 142)

Il Natale è un tempo in cui possiamo percepire meglio del solito questa tensione. E’ la festa della famiglia per eccellenza, legata a molte tradizioni locali che ci scaldano il cuore e donano senso. Tuttavia allo stesso tempo il messaggio del Natale è universale, di pace per tutte le persone di buona volontà. Gesù è nato ebreo, nella città di Betlemme, ma, come l’angelo ha annunciato ai pastori, la buona notizia della salvezza che Egli porta “non è solo per voi, ma per tutto il popolo”.

‘Bisogna guardare al globale, che ci riscatta dalla meschinità casalinga. Quando la casa non è più famiglia, ma è recinto, cella, il globale ci riscatta perché è come la causa finale che ci attira verso la pienezza.’ (FT 142) Abbiamo bisogno della sfida che ci viene da altri luoghi, di aprirci per essere arricchiti da altre culture, di solidarietà per le tragedie che affliggono gli altri popoli.

‘Al tempo stesso, bisogna assumere cordialmente la dimensione locale, perché possiede qualcosa che il globale non ha: essere lievito, arricchire, avviare dispositivi di sussidiarietà. ‘ (ibid.)

Në fillim të enciklikës së tij (FT 3), Papa kujton vizitën e Shën Françeskut te Sulltan Malik-el-Kamil, në Egjipt. Ishte koha e Kryqëzatave, e urrejtjes së fortë dhe konfliktit midis myslimanëve dhe të krishterëve. Megjithatë, Françesku ndjeu thirrjen për të përhapur mesazhin e tij të vëllazërisë universale edhe tek ata që konsideroheshin të pafe dhe kundȅrshtare të fesë sonë. Thirrja për vëllazëri universale dhe miqësi sociale është ende urgjente edhe sot.

Bota jonë është globalizuar, një proces që po ndodh me një shpejtësi të tillë që shpesh na bën të çorientuar. Globalizimi e ka bërë komunikimin shumë më të lehtë, duke e afruar njerëzimin më shumë se kurrë më parë. Por nga ana tjeter ka krijuar edhe shumë viktima, ka dobësuar komunitetet lokale dhe ka tretur sensin tonë të identitetit. Shpesh ne nuk ndjehemi më ndryshe se  të qënurit pjesë e një turme anonime individësh, me pak kontroll mbi atë që po ndodh. Tundimi për t’u tërhequr në atë që dimë më mirë dhe që mund ta kontrollojmë, po bëhet më i fortë për më shumë njerëz.

Fratelli tutti na fton të punojmë për një marrëdhënie të re midis lokale dhe asaj globale. “Ne duhet t’i kushtojmë vëmendje globales në mënyrë që të shmangim ngushtësinë dhe banalitetin. Nga ana tjeter duhet të shikojmë drejt lokales, që na mban me  këmbë në tokë. ‘(FT 142)

Krishtlindja është një kohë kur ne mund ta ndiejmë këtë tension më shumë se zakonisht. Ȅshtë feste familjare kryesisht, e lidhur me kaq shumë zakone lokale që na ngrohin zemrat tona dhe i japin asaj kuptim. Megjithatë, mesazhi i saj është dhe njëkohësisht universal, ai i paqes për të gjithë ata me vullnet të mire. Jezusi lindi një Hebre, në qytetin e Betlehemit, por, siç zbuloi dhe  engjëlli barinjve, lajmi i mirë i shpëtimit që ai sjell nuk ishte vetëm për ata por për të gjithë njerëzit.

“Ne duhet të kemi një këndvështrim global për të shpëtuar veten nga provincializmi i ulët. Kur banesa jonë pushon së qeni një shtëpi dhe fillon të bëhet një mbyllje, një qelizë, atëherë globalja na vjen në ndihmë, duke na tërhequr drejt përmbushjes sonë. “(FT 142) Ne duhet njihemi me sfidat e asaj që po ndodh në vende të tjera, hapja ndaj pasurimit me kulturat e tjera, solidariteti për tragjeditë që prekin popujt e tjerë.

“Në të njëjtën kohë, lokalja duhet të përqafuar me entuziazëm, sepse ajo zotëron diçka që globalja nuk e ka: është e aftë të jetë si tharmi, të sjellë përmirësim, të ndezë mekanizmat e parimit të plotësueshmërisë.” (ibid)
