[5] ‘Prayer’s the simplest thing!’

This is a quote from the first page of Sister Wendy on Prayer (Continuum, 2007). The famous ‘art nun’, who passed away in 2018, was a contemplative who lived in seclusion, dedicating most of her time to prayer and silence. So when she speaks about prayer we do well to pay attention, especially when she makes such startling statements.

‘Prayer is the last thing we should feel discouraged about. It concerns nobody except God – always longing only to give Himself to us in love – and my own decision. And that too is God’s, who works in us to will and to effect. In a very true sense there is nothing more to say about prayer, ‘the simplest thing out’ (p 3-4).

This is also St Paul’s experience. Paul was no hermit living in seclusion, but a man who found God in his tireless proclamation of the Gospel. In his letter to the Romans (8: 26-27), he says, We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. St Paul is saying that though we feel we do not know how to pray or what to pray for, the Holy Spirit knows the depths of our heart and intervenes on our behalf, making our prayer effective and meaningful. God himself helps us to pray, enabling us to reach beyond what we think we are capable of.

For Sr Wendy the only question is: ‘What do [you] really want when [you] pray? Do you want to be possessed by God? Or, to put the same question more honestly, do you want to want it? Then you have it!’

Prayer is ‘the simplest thing’ because it is mostly God’s work in us. Our part is to open ourselves to his presence and to his goodness: God does not need to be reminded of what we need, he already knows that. It is we who need to be reminded that God’s generosity is within reach: So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. (Lk 11: 9-10)

‘Pregare è la cosa più semplice!’

Questa è una citazione presa dalla prima pagina del libro di Sorella Wendy sulla preghiera (Continuum, 2007). Questa celebre storica dell’arte, scomparsa nel 2018, era una suora contemplativa che viveva in clausura, dedicando la maggior parte del suo tempo alla preghiera e al silenzio. Perciò quando ci parla della preghiera faremmo bene a prestarle attenzione, particolarmente se fa questo tipo di affermazioni.

‘La preghiera è l’ultima delle cose su cui dovremmo scoraggiarci. Non riguarda nient’ altro che Dio – il cui unico desiderio è donarsi a noi nell’amore – e la mia decisione. E anche quella viene da Dio, che promuove in noi il desiderio e la realizzazione. Veramente non c’è nient’altro da dire sulla preghiera se non: ‘la cosa più semplice’ (p. 3-4).

Questa è stata anche l’esperienza di S. Paolo, che non era un eremita e non viveva in clausura, ma era un uomo che trovava Dio nell’ annuncio instancabile del Vangelo. Nella sua lettera ai Romani (8, 26-27), afferma che: nemmeno sappiamo che cosa sia conveniente domandare, ma lo Spirito stesso intercede con insistenza per noi, con gemiti inesprimibili; e colui che scruta i cuori sa quali sono i desideri dello Spirito, poiché egli intercede per i credenti secondo i disegni di Dio. S. Paolo sta dicendo che, sebbene ci sembri di non sapere come pregare, o per cosa pregare, lo Spirito Santo conosce le profondità del nostro cuore e interviene per conto nostro, rendendo la nostra preghiera efficace e piena di significato. Dio stesso ci aiuta a pregare, rendendoci capaci di andare oltre ciò di cui pensiamo di essere capaci.

Per suor Wendy l’unica domanda è: ‘Cosa vuoi davvero quando preghi? Vuoi essere abitato da Dio? O, per essere più onesti, desideri di volerlo? Allora lo avrai!’

La preghiera è ‘la cosa più semplice’ perché principalmente è l’opera di Dio in noi. La nostra parte è aprirci alla sua presenza e alla sua bontà: Dio non ha bisogno che gli ricordiamo di cosa abbiamo bisogno, lo sa già. Siamo noi ad aver bisogno di ricordarci che la generosità di Dio è a portata di mano: Ebbene io vi dico: Chiedete e vi sarà dato, cercate e troverete, bussate e vi sarà aperto. Perché chi chiede ottiene, chi cerca trova, e a chi bussa sarà aperto.  (Lc 11, 9-10)

“Lutja është gjëja më e thjeshtë!”

Ky është një citim nga faqja e parë e Moter Wendy  mbi Lutjen (Continuum, 2007). E famshmja “murgesha e artit”, e cila u nda nga jeta në vitin 2018, ishte një medituese që jetonte e izoluar, duke ia kushtuar pjesën më të madhe të kohës lutjes dhe heshtjes. Prandaj, kur ajo flet për lutjen, bëjmë mirë t’i kushtojmë vëmendje, veçanërisht kur ajo bën deklarata të tilla befasuese.

“Lutja është gjëja e fundit për të cilën duhet të ndihemi të dekurajuar. Ajo nuk ka të bëjë me askënd përveç Zotit në njërën anë – gjithmonë me dëshirën për të na u dhuruar  me dashuri –  dhe me vendimin tim në anën tjetër”. Dhe Ky është Zoti, i cili vepron në ne për miresi dhe për dashuri . Në një kuptim shumë të vërtetë, nuk ka asgjë më shumë për të thënë për lutjen, “gjëja më e thjeshtë” (fq 3-4).

Kjo është gjithashtu përvoja e Shën Palit. Pali nuk ishte nje i vetmuar që jetonte në izolim, por një njeri që gjeti Zotin në shpalljen e tij të palodhur të Ungjillit. Në letrën e tij drejtuar Romakëve (8: 26-27), ai thotë: “Ne nuk e dimë se për çfarë duhet të lutemi, por vetë Shpirti ndërmjetëson për ne përmes ofshamave  pa fjalë. Dhe ai që kërkon zemrat tona e njeh thellësine e Shpirtit, sepse Shpirti ndërmjetëson për popullin e Zotit në përputhje me vullnetin e Tij. Shën Pali thotë se edhe pse ne ndiejmë se nuk dimë si të lutemi apo për çfarë të lutemi, Shpirti i Shenjtë njeh thellësitë e zemrës sonë dhe ndërhyn në emrin tonë, duke e bërë lutjen tonë efektive dhe kuptimplote. Vetë Hyji  na ndihmon të lutemi, duke na mundësuar të arrijmë përtej asaj që mendojmë se jemi të aftë.

Për moter Wendyn  pyetja e vetme është:”Çfarë doni vërtet kur [ju] luteni? Dëshironi të jeni të poseduar nga Zoti? Ose, për ta bërë të njëjtën pyetje më sinqerisht, a dëshironi ta doni atë?    Atëherë e keni!”

Lutja është “gjëja më e thjeshtë” sepse është kryesisht vepra e Hyjit në ne. Puna jonë është të hapemi ndaj pranisë dhe mirësisë së tij: Hyji nuk ka nevojë ti kujtojme se për cfarë ne kemi nevojë, ai në të vërtete e di këtë. Jemi ne ata që duhet të kujtohemi se bujaria e Zotit është e arritshme: Prandaj unë ju them: Kërkoni dhe do t’ju jepet; kërkoni dhe do të gjeni; trokitni dhe dera do t’ju hapet. Sepse kushdo që kërkon, merr; ai që kërkon gjen; dhe atij që troket do t’i celet dera. (Lk 11:9-10)
